Surrounded by Tanzania’s highlands, this UNESCO-listed crater is said to be the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Visitors can look forward to spotting the world-renowned Big Five and a host of other wildlife species including large herds of zebra and wildebeest. Now the adventure starts as you head towards Lake Manyara where you will meet up with the rest of the group and embark on a game drive through Lake Manyara as well as stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. Lake Manyara has incredible biodiversity due to the many types of habitat found within it – from thick, lush ground water forest, to open lake shore and dryer acacia woodland.  It lies between the large alkaline Lake Manyara and the Gregory Rift escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. Head out of Lake Manyara and your way into the Ngorongoro Highlands.

On arrival at Angata Ngorongoro Luxury Tented Camp, check in and spend one night a tent with all meals included.

Ang'ata Ngorongoro Camp

The camp is situated amongst a beautiful grove of Acacia Lahai trees on the North Eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. Situated ideally just off the descent road, the camp allows you to take advantage of the early hours in the Crater while it is still cool, animals are active, and the mass of other safari vehicles haven’t descended yet.

Ang'ata Ngorongoro Camp with 7 medium size tents and 1 double Family Tent and is ideally situated on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, just inside the Lemala Ranger Post. It allows early descent in the crater before the crowds arrive and late game drives when most have already left the Crater floor.  Each guest tent has an en suite bathroom with shower and vanity desk.  The camp’s lounge is the place to meet other travellers and share safari stories while enjoying a complimentary cup of Tanzanian coffee or tea.  Breakfasts, lunches and dinners are served in the dining tent, freshly prepared on a daily basis.  Bush TV, the local name for campfires, is lit when the weather permits.  Crater Floor Lunches and Walking Safaris to be booked upon reservation.

By late morning, we will make our way up and out of the Crater, and down off of the highlands onto the short-grass plains of the Serengeti. As we make our way towards the Central Serengeti, we will have the option to pass by the Olduvai Gorge archaeological museum.

On arrival at Pembezoni Tented Camp, check in and spend one night in tents with all meals and selected local drinks included.

Pembezoni Camp

Boasting large guest tents with en-suite toilet & shower, a large mess tent with an open fire-pit out front, and a library tent with a spacious verandah, the Pembezoni camp is a great home in the bush. This is a great platform from which to venture into the wild to explore the Serengeti on foot.

DAy 4

Dorobo Mobile Safari Serengeti, Eastern Serengeti

Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day ITinerary

We will start our walk on the first day directly from the Pembezoni camp, arriving at our first mobile camp in the wilderness area around lunch time.

The schedule for each day of walking is flexible, however a typical day of walking would look something like this.

Have an early breakfast and coffee from the fire and begin to prepare for the day of walking. With a GPS point as a reference we make our way over rolling hills, along small rivers and around small rock out-croppings to our private camp that has packed up, driven around and set up for our arrival around lunch.

The afternoon is spent relaxing from the days walk. Smaller natural history/birding walks or game drives are evening options. Over the course of three days of walking from camp location to camp location, one covers a large area of pristine wilderness on foot.

During the walks an armed walking guide who acts as a translator and natural history interpreter accompanies us. Walking is about a wilderness experience in its entireness, from bird sounds in the distance, to the tracks left by insects in the sand. It is the chance to cover a large area on foot much like our ancestors once did.

Mobile Camping

Our Private Dorobo Mobile camps are by necessity basic, but comfortable. They allow you to access some of the most remote areas left to explore in Tanzania, while still giving you the creature comforts to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. There are few, if any, companies that are able to break-up camp in the morning and have it ready in a new location when you walk into camp for lunch.

We believe that we have found the perfect medium between providing for our basic needs while creating an experience of "real" camping, where one feels completely a part of the environment around you, rather than apart from it. Our tents are large enough to stand in, and are furnished with beds, mattresses, bedding and towels. The solar showers provided are simple, but exactly what one needs to wash off the safari dust after a day of walking.  In some areas, water is a scarcity and showers are often rationed to one a day. We provide enclosed pit-latrines with a wooden seat over.  Simple but effective, these also align with our "leave no trace" philosophy.

Our camp staff will cook up scrumptious, hearty meals and ensuring that your needs, from the first hot sip of coffee in the morning to the last satisfied sip of your nightcap in the evening is taken care of for you.

Meals are normally eaten around the fire, under the stars, or in the shade of an Acacia Tree.  We do set up our mobile dining canopies which acts as central gathering place for meals should you wish to eat at a table and be sheltered from the weather.

History Dorobo's

The Serengeti truly offers some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing and scenery in Africa. However, most visitors now experience this from a vehicle and often in the company of many other tourists and vehicles. In the early years of Dorobo, we pioneered some special remote walking experiences in the buffer areas to the east of the park where we worked with the local Maasai communities. While we still have a foot in these areas, they have been partially compromised due to various conflicts over the wildlife resources (another whole story) and in 2009 we shifted our focus to some of the wilderness zones within the Serengeti National Park itself that are set aside for walking. We are one of the few companies currently authorized to conduct treks in these areas and they allow a return to the past where one has that unique freedom to walk each day to a new camp in an area that feels like your own private wilderness. At almost any time of the year, we can put together anywhere from a 3 to 7-day trek that covers new ground each day. The landscape is varied with rolling ridges and hills, rock kopjes, open plains and valleys that support permanent water in the rivers that make their way west ending eventually in Lake Victoria. Wildlife is usually extremely varied and fairly abundant with chances of encountering almost any of the vast array of species of found in the Serengeti.

The springs offer a year-round water supply which supports resident herbivores and their predators. During this time of year, the area also normally has an influx of migrating wildlife from the massive, majestic Eland to the dainty Thompson’s Gazelle, and with luck, the large herds of Wildebeest and Zebra that define the great migration.

Handy Tips

  • Visas/Passports: Please ensure: 1) that you have pre-arranged your entry visa if required; 2) that your passport is valid for at least six months after your scheduled departure date from Tanzania; 3) that you have a minimum of 2 consecutive clear pages. If this is not the case, there is a danger of being turned away by the Immigration Service on arrival at the airport – assuming your airline has agreed to bring you and risk a fine in the first place.
  • Please ensure that you have arranged the entire necessary single or multiple entry visas prior to your arrival into southern Africa (unless you have confirmed they are available on entry). For an up to date list on which nationalities are automatically granted tourist visas upon entry into Tanzania please refer to the Tanzania Tourism Board website – http://tanzaniatourism.go.tz/en/tanzania/visa-requirements.
  • For Visa application procedures, please visit the Tanzanian Ministry of Home Affairs website - https://immigration.go.tz/index.php/en/
  • It is your clients’ responsibility to ensure that the necessary visa requirements are complied with before entering the county. safariFRANK cannot be held responsible for any travellers being declined access into the country due to incorrect papers.
  • Health: No vaccinations are mandatory, but please consult your doctor for medical advice. Parts of Tanzania are considered to be malarial so we recommend the use of anti-malarial prophylactics (normally Malarone) – subject to advice from your own doctor.
  • Luggage is normally restricted to 15 per person including photographic equipment and hand luggage - in soft, hold all type bags which should not have any wheels, frames, or rigid structures as these may not be able to fit in the plane’s luggage compartment.  If adding other extensions that involve other light aircraft transfers, the luggage limit may be reduced even further to 12kg in soft bags (please enquire if you think this may apply to you).
  • Luggage Dimensions: The maximum dimensions for soft bags that can be easily accommodated are as follows: 25cm (10 inches) wide, 30cm (12 inches) high, and 62cm (24 inches) long
  • Passenger weights: Please note that passengers weighing over 100kg may be required to pay for a second seat when flying on scheduled seat rate flights. This should not be applicable very often and it would rarely be the case if travelling on private charter flights when some of the seats are not filled. This is more a matter of the pilot being able to balance the plane for safety reasons than because of the seemingly arbitrary weight limit. However, please let us know in advance if this restriction is likely to apply to you so we can do whatever is possible to minimize the likelihood of it becoming an issue or leading to any significant extra costs.
  • Vehicles: Vehicles used are normally specially modified 4x4 Toyota Landcruisers, equipped with air-conditioning and fridges for drinks and snacks. A trailer for luggage is taken if required.
