Self Drive Namibia

What is this safari about?

Namibia is a vast country even in African standards, twice the size of California! This combined with the very low population, excellent road network and infrastructure, makes for an ideal self drive destination. It allows for an amazingly ‘soulful’ feeling of peace and solitude.

Rent a 4×4 station wagon, or a fully equipped 4×4, plan the itinerary and off you go to wherever you heart desires to discover Namibia’s wide-open spaces! Should you prefer to have some local knowledge on hand, the trip can be escorted or guided. The trip can be lodge to lodge, camping or a combination thereof.

The vehicles are late model, low mileage Toyota Hilux or Land Cruisers, unequipped as standard, or with roof top tents and everything else that you will need should you wish to camp. Vehicles can be fitted with one or two roof top tents, the latter allowing for four people per vehicle.

Who can go?

  • Couples, families or small groups with multiple vehicles.
  • Children of any age can go.
  • Adventurers or the less adventurous as diverse locations cater for both!

Why is this special?

  • Independence and freedom to explore!
  • Jaw dropping scenery second to none.
  • Vast and incredible diverse landscapes to explore in your own time.
  • World class self drive game viewing in the Etosha.
  • Great sense of space, tranquility and wilderness.
  • Safe environment and excellent gravel roads, unique in Africa!

Where is this?

Self-drive can go anywhere in Namibia from the Etosha in the North, to the Namib Desert and Fish River Canyon in the South. SAFARI FRANK will work with you to develop an itinerary covering all the MUST see places, as well as your particular interests.

What should I expect to pay?

Daily rates for a Toyota Hilux or Land Cruiser are from USD 130 and USD 180 respectively for standard vehicles, and USD 150 and USD 200 for fully equipped. Discounts are available for long rentals.

Due to long distances travelled and good gravel roads travellers should be mindful to keep to speed limits so as to avoid single vehicle accidents.

Vehicle insurance should be carefully checked to ensure comprehensive cover and where possible excesses should be reduced.

What Extensions do you recommend?

There are many great lodges to combine with the drive.

In addition cross border self-driving to Botswana could be included
